Energy is firmly back in the spotlight for London market carriers, with fresh moves that underline both the depth of capital being directed at the sector and the importance of experienced leadership.

On the underwriting side, HDI Global UK & Ireland is scaling up its energy & power platform in London as it looks to position itself as a recognised lead market for complex risks. At the same time, governance and board‑level expertise are in focus at AEGIS London, which has appointed Dominion Energy chief Robert Blue as a non‑executive director to further strengthen its oversight and strategic capability.

AEGIS London appoints Dominion Energy chief Robert Blue to board

AEGIS London has appointed Robert Blue (pictured, left) as a non-executive director, further strengthening the board of the top-quartile Lloyd’s syndicate.

Blue joined Dominion in 2005 and has held a series of senior leadership roles across regulatory, operational and public policy functions. He became president and CEO in October 2020 and chair in April 2021. He is also a board member of Associated Electric & Gas Insurance Services Limited (AEGIS), AEGIS London's parent company.

AEGIS London said Blue's appointment supports its commitment to maintaining a board with broad governance and financial expertise as it pursues further growth in the Lloyd's and global specialty markets.

“I am pleased to be joining AEGIS London’s board. As one of Lloyd’s leading syndicates it is a respected name within the market. I look forward to contributing to its success and supporting its commitment to excellence," Blue commented.

HDI Global boosts London Energy & Power presence

HDI Global UK & Ireland (HDI) is significantly expanding its presence in the London energy & power insurance market as it targets recognised lead market status for brokers and clients.

The move follows the appointment of Matthew Bond (pictured, right) as head of energy & power in March, as part of a wider plan to strengthen HDI's coordinated energy & power offering across its key hubs in London, Singapore, Dubai and Houston.

London will act as a central pillar of that strategy, reflecting its role as a core global energy insurance market.

HDI is investing in underwriting, claims and risk engineering capabilities in London. Recent changes include the appointment of Dave Wilson as global head of energy claims and the relocation of experienced underwriters from within HDI Group, including Ferhat Aclan from Hanover.

The insurer also said it is in advanced stages of recruitment for multiple roles within the Energy & Power team.

Bond said the aim is to bring together HDI’s existing capabilities into a clearer market presence in London.

"We are bringing together HDI's long-established global Energy & Power expertise into a more visible and accessible London platform," he said. "Our ambition is to be a meaningful and long term partner in transformation – by investing in underwriting, claims and risk engineering, we are building a proposition that goes beyond capacity and delivers real value to brokers and clients.”
