Mergers & Acquisitions

Relation Insurance Services has acquired the assets of Thorn Creek Insurance Services Inc. in a deal that expands the national broker’s footprint in agribusiness and commercial lines.

The transaction took effect on Jan. 31, 2026. Terms were not disclosed.

Thorn Creek, headquartered in Springfield, Illinois, entered the property and casualty market in 2011 writing farm, business, livestock and commercial agriculture risks, which remain its core focus. The firm, founded by Troy Alexander, has since built a coast‑to‑coast client base and broadened its offer to include home, auto, life, trucking, pollution legal liability, pet business insurance and other commercial coverages.

“Joining the Relation team just made sense,” said Alexander. “Our expertise, our culture, our goals for growth... they all aligned with Relation. Our clients will benefit greatly from the expanded resources we can now offer and our team is excited to help Relation continue their success.”

Agribusiness expansion in the Midwest

Relation has long positioned agribusiness as a strategic specialty, with roots in the segment stretching back more than 75 years through legacy operations serving growers, packers, shippers, food processors and farm‑labor contractors.

The addition of Thorn Creek deepens that capability in the Midwest and adds further scale in farm and livestock accounts at a time when weather volatility, input‑cost inflation and evolving liability exposures are sharpening demand for specialist advice.

Thorn Creek’s mix of farm and commercial ag, alongside main street and personal lines, also fits Relation’s strategy of building regional platforms that can service clients across multiple segments while retaining local relationships.

String of acquisitions under private equity ownership

The Thorn Creek deal is the latest in a run of acquisitions that has reshaped Relation’s profile over the past several years.

Since private equity firm Aquiline Capital Partners first invested in the broker in 2019, Relation has completed more than 100 agency acquisitions across the US, using M&A as a primary growth lever alongside producer recruitment.

In Illinois, Relation acquired the assets of Joseph M. Wiedemann & Sons Inc., a fourth‑generation agency based in Arlington Heights, adding a mix of commercial and personal P&C with a strong employee benefits component and strengthening its Chicago‑area presence. In California, the broker bought Bridlewood Insurance Services, a San Diego‑based specialist in Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement and Part D plans, giving Relation a scaled entry into the Medicare and senior‑health market.

In February 2026, Aquiline agreed to sell Relation to private investment firm BayPine. The pending deal signals that a second private equity owner sees further runway for Relation’s buy‑and‑build strategy, including continued targeting of specialist agencies such as Thorn Creek.

Market context: mid-market brokerage consolidation

The latest acquisition also reflects ongoing consolidation in the US mid‑market brokerage space, where national and super‑regional brokers are competing to acquire independent agencies with niche expertise and strong local relationships.

For Relation, buying firms with deep sector knowledge in areas such as agriculture, Medicare and senior health, and employee benefits has been central to its positioning as a specialty‑led national platform.
