Two specialty insurance firms have announced key leadership appointments as they seek to strengthen their positions in the professional liability and cannabis insurance markets.

Brown & Riding professional liability practice leader

Brown & Riding has named Wes Benefield (pictured above, left) as its national professional liability practice leader. Benefield, who is based in Fort Worth, Texas, joined the firm in 2024 and was named principal in 2025. He brings more than 10 years of experience in the executive lines market, having worked across the retailer, carrier, and wholesale segments.

In his new role, Benefield will work with brokers and firm leadership to support growth, maintain carrier partnerships, and ensure the delivery of consistent client solutions. He will also focus on fostering collaboration within the broader management and professional liability practice.

“Wes brings an exceptional combination of technical expertise, creativity, and drive,” said Jeff Rodriguez, president and CEO. Rodriguez added that Benefield’s leadership reflects the firm’s collaborative and specialized approach, and that he is confident Benefield will continue to strengthen the professional liability practice.

Earlier this month, Brown & Riding also announced that Maria Healy has joined its national property practice.

Starwind Cannabis EVP for sales and distribution

In a separate development, Starwind Specialty Insurance Services, a CRC Group company, has appointed Charles Pyfrom (pictured above, right) as executive vice president, sales and distribution for Starwind Cannabis, the company’s specialty program focused on the cannabis industry.

Pyfrom, previously chief marketing officer at a managing general underwriting firm specializing in the legal cannabis, CBD, and hemp sectors, brings experience in insurance distribution, strategic partnerships, and broker engagement.

Pyfrom will oversee the program’s national sales and distribution strategy, drive growth, and strengthen broker partnerships. He will also focus on expanding production and reinforcing Starwind’s reputation for underwriting, responsiveness, and stability.

“Charles is one of the most respected voices in the cannabis and specialty program arenas,” said Tony McIntosh, program president of Starwind Cannabis. McIntosh said Pyfrom understands the challenges brokers face and shares the company’s vision for delivering with speed, clarity, and knowledge.

Last month, Starwind Specialty also consolidated JH Blades, Southern Marine, and Energy Technical Underwriters into its new Starwind Marine and Energy brand.
