Mitch Brown

Mitch Brown is a senior commercial insurance and risk management leader with more than 15 years of experience across retail brokerage, carrier operations, MGAs, and national distribution. He currently serves as Head of Commercial Insurance at Rate Insurance, where he leads commercial strategy and placement nationwide across all 50 states.

Mitch specializes in structuring and negotiating complex risk programs for middle-market and enterprise clients, with deep expertise in energy, ocean marine, professional services, and financial services. His work spans D&O and professional liability, cyber, workers’ compensation, property, general liability, and excess casualty, with a focus on underwriting strategy, carrier alignment, and Total Cost of Risk (TCOR) optimization.

Known for challenging transactional insurance models, Mitch advocates for a more disciplined, advisory-led approach to risk—one that emphasizes preparation, data-driven decision-making, and long-term resilience over short-term pricing wins. He frequently advises agency leadership teams on growth strategy, producer systems, carrier strategy, and capitalization, and has supported agencies from startup through scale, acquisition, and exit.

Mitch is the author of The Ultimate Advantage: Your Guide to Winning in Commercial Insurance (2024), which explores how agents and advisors can differentiate themselves by thinking like risk strategists rather than product sellers.

Prior to insurance, Mitch served over 15 years in the U.S. Army as an Infantryman, retiring as a Sergeant First Class after multiple combat deployments. His military service was recognized with the Purple HeartBronze Star Medal with Valor, and the Master Combat Infantryman Badge—experiences that continue to shape his disciplined, risk-first approach to leadership and advocacy.
