Kin, a direct-to-consumer digital home insurance company, has entered the Colorado market as part of its broader strategy to serve regions impacted by severe weather events.
The company uses technology and property-specific data to assess risk and price policies. Its expansion into Colorado comes as the state sees a growing number of costly weather-related events.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Colorado experienced a 159% increase in billion-dollar weather disasters in recent years, including wildfires, droughts, and freezing conditions.
Kin’s platform evaluates a range of factors unique to each home in order to tailor pricing and coverage. The company said this approach is intended to reflect risks tied to Colorado’s varied terrain, including hailstorms in the Front Range, wildfire exposure in mountainous areas, and severe weather on the plains.
“Colorado homeowners deserve insurance that is as unique as the local landscape,” said Sean Harper, CEO and founder of Kin. “We've built our technology to understand what differentiates each Colorado property, so we can offer the customized protection residents need at prices that make sense for their budgets.”
Home insurance premiums in Colorado rose by 59.5% between 2018 and 2023, according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association. Kin said its direct-to-consumer model is designed to reduce overhead, offer online quotes, and streamline claims processing.
“Colorado homeowners are resourceful people who want straightforward insurance that delivers value,” said Angel Conlin, chief insurance officer at Kin. “Our home insurance is designed with Colorado in mind. We understand hail season, wildfire considerations, and winter weather challenges because our platform was built to effectively and affordably serve markets like Colorado.”
Kin currently operates in several other states with frequent severe weather, including Florida, Texas, California, and Louisiana. The company reports a customer satisfaction rating of 4.8 out of 5 in these markets.
