White Mountains Insurance Group has completed the sale of a controlling interest in Bamboo to affiliates of funds advised by CVC Capital Partners.

Following the deal, White Mountains will retain an approximately 15% diluted equity stake in Bamboo.

Bamboo is a specialty insurance business focused on niche markets and tailored underwriting solutions. By selling a controlling stake, White Mountains is transferring operational control to CVC while maintaining a minority interest, allowing the company to benefit from future growth while freeing capital for other strategic initiatives.

The transaction reflects ongoing interest from private equity in specialty insurance platforms. CVC’s involvement is expected to provide Bamboo with additional resources, capital, and strategic support to expand its offerings and geographic reach.

For White Mountains, retaining a 15% stake allows the firm to remain connected to Bamboo’s performance while reallocating capital toward other investments in its portfolio.

White Mountains deals

Earlier this year, White Mountains agreed to acquire a majority stake in managing general agent Distinguished Programs in a deal valued at $230 million.

The Bermuda-based financial services holding company said it increased its ownership to about 51%, adding to the 1% equity interst it already held. The acquisition underscored White Mountains' ongoing strategy of selectively investing in specialty insurance platforms with growth potential.

Insurers and investment funds are increasingly targeting high-growth, niche underwriting platforms. Specialty insurers are attractive due to their focus on underserved markets, disciplined underwriting, and potential for scalable expansion. Transactions of this nature can also influence competitive dynamics, particularly in segments where capital infusion and strategic backing accelerate growth and innovation.

Overall, White Mountains’ approach balances monetization of existing investments with continued participation in promising businesses. With CVC assuming operational control of Bamboo and the upcoming Distinguished Programs acquisition, White Mountains is positioning itself to capitalize on long-term growth opportunities in the specialty insurance sector.
