Marsh McLennan Agency pushes deeper into Montana with Seitz Insurance deal

Marsh McLennan Agency (MMA) has acquired Seitz Insurance, a six-decade-old independent agency in Sidney, Montana, as the firm continues its steady rollup of regional brokerages across the United States.

MMA, a business of Marsh, did not disclose terms. The deal adds to its nine existing offices across central and western Montana and brings in Seitz Insurance's specialization in agriculture, crop, and energy coverage.

It is the latest in more than 60 acquisitions Marsh McLennan Agency has completed since its founding in 2009, according to Tracxn. The buying spree peaked in 2024 with nine deals, headlined by the $7.75 billion purchase of McGriff Insurance Services, which added $1.3 billion in revenue and pushed MMA's pro forma total to approximately $5 billion.

Earlier this year, MMA acquired Robinson & Son LLC, a New York-based agency specializing in marine insurance.

The Seitz deal follows the same logic: picking up regional firms with sector-specific expertise that would be difficult to build from scratch.

Eastern Montana's risk profile

Eastern Montana, where Seitz Insurance has operated since 1961, is a region shaped by its industries. The state ranks second only to Texas with nearly 58 million acres of farmland, US Department of Agriculture data shows, and wheat alone is valued at roughly $565 million in annual exports.

Most of Montana's crude oil production comes from the Bakken Formation in the Williston Basin, the US Energy Information Administration notes.

A PwC analysis commissioned by the American Petroleum Institute found that in 2021, the state's oil and gas sector supported nearly 57,000 jobs and contributed over $7 billion to the economy. Severe weather compounds the exposure. A drought that same year caused more than $500 million in crop losses statewide.

Sarah Walsh (pictured above), CEO of MMA's Northwest region, called Seitz Insurance "a household name" and said the acquisition helps "round out more of our services on the eastern side of the state." In 2023, Seitz acquired Polson-based Bishop Insurance Services, expanding into the Flathead and Mission Valley area.

All Seitz employees, including co-owners David Seitz and Camila Skinner, will join Marsh McLennan Agency and continue working from their existing offices.

David Seitz said joining MMA gives the agency confidence it "can continue serving our clients with integrity and industry-leading solutions, while giving our colleagues room to grow."
