Property and casualty insurer Westfield has appointed Dan Thomas (pictured above) as senior vice president and chief actuary, tasking him with overseeing the company’s enterprise-wide actuarial function as it sharpens its focus on pricing, capital modeling and data-driven decision-making.
Thomas, who will be based in Westfield’s New York City office, is expected to play a central role in aligning actuarial analysis with the company’s underwriting, finance, strategy, and risk management operations. He will also serve on governance committees and lead efforts to modernize actuarial capabilities across Westfield’s personal, commercial, surety, and specialty lines.
His appointment comes as insurers place greater emphasis on predictive analytics and capital efficiency amid competitive pricing and evolving regulatory pressures.
Thomas most recently served as chief international actuary at Tokio Marine Holdings, where he led a global team of more than 500 actuaries across reserving, pricing, financial reporting, and capital functions. Prior to that, he headed the US P&C actuarial services practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he developed consulting models in response to industry shifts and regulatory change.
In announcing the move, Westfield chief operating officer Joe Kohmann said Thomas’ experience in applying actuarial insights to strategic planning would support the insurer’s long-term goals.
“His ability to translate complex actuarial insights into clear, actionable strategies will enhance our enterprise decision-making,” Kohmann said.
Thomas said the actuarial function plays a “critical role” in shaping financial outcomes. “Westfield is a performance-driven company with clear strategic ambitions, and I look forward to partnering across the enterprise to deepen our risk understanding and support long-term, profitable growth,” he said.
The hire reflects Westfield’s continued investment in actuarial leadership as insurers face pressures tied to reserving adequacy, capital modeling, and the expanding use of advanced analytics.
