Tokio Marine Highland has appointed Steve Prymas (pictured) as its new chief executive officer, effective June 1. The leadership change follows the departure of Norman Heinrich, who is stepping down after more than 30 years with the company. Heinrich served as CEO since 2022 and will continue with the organization in an advisory role.

Prymas joins the specialty property and casualty underwriting agency with more than 25 years of insurance industry experience. He most recently served as chief underwriting officer and board member at Hiscox, a global specialist insurer. His career includes leadership roles at Embroker, Gen Re, The Hartford, Marsh, and Reliance National.

Founded in 1962, Tokio Marine Highland is a subsidiary of Tokio Marine Kiln and part of the Tokio Marine Group.

“Tokio Marine Highland has built a reputation for strength, integrity, and expertise far beyond its size,” Prymas said in a statement. “I’m honored to join this exceptional team and energized by the opportunity to lead this organization.”

Matthew Shaw, CEO of parent company Tokio Marine Kiln, highlighted Prymas’ background in underwriting and leadership across the US insurance market. “Steve brings a deep understanding of the US insurance market,” Shaw said. “His extensive expertise and experience will be invaluable as we work together to further our ambitious strategy.”

Heinrich expressed confidence in the company’s future leadership. “I’m immensely proud of the way Tokio Marine Highland has grown and matured over the years,” he said. “But it’s time to hand off the baton.”

Tokio Marine Highland operates in Chicago, Frisco, Irvine, Miami, and South Pasadena and provides specialty risk management solutions across sectors including private flood, fine art, real estate investment, and lender-placed insurance.

In January, Tokio Marine Highland marked the 30th anniversary of its Private Flood Division, originally established by Heinrich in 1995. The division, which began in Heinrich’s garage, has evolved into a market leader in private flood insurance, offering residential, commercial, and excess flood coverage.
