Insurance payouts for storm damage in Kansas reached $879.07 million in 2025, which is nearly double the $442.8 million recorded in 2023, according to the Kansas Department of Insurance. The increase came even as the number of storm-related claims declined.

A total of 82,498 claims were filed in 2025, much lower than the recorded 147,710 in 2023. However, the regulator said each claim cost significantly more on average, with the amount paid per claim being 99% higher than two years earlier.

“These numbers serve as a reminder that severe storms happen right here in Kansas, and the damage is costly,” Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt said in a statement.

The figures come from the department’s annual property and casualty insurer data call, which collects information from insurers across the state. The dataset includes claims related to damage caused by hail, wind, water, fire, and other weather-related events.

One of the most damaging events occurred in early September when a severe hailstorm struck the Wichita area in Sedgwick County. Reports indicated hailstones reached about up to three inches in diameter - which is roughly the same of a baseball - and home improvement companies estimated that between 100,000 and 140,000 homes in the area may have sustained damage from the storm.

As such, Sedgwick County recorded the highest total storm claim payments across counties, with insurers paying more than $328 million in 2025. Rush County reported the lowest amount, with $101,806 in claim payments.

According to BestLink data, the largest writers of homeowners multiple peril insurance in Kansas in 2024 were State Farm Group with a 21.29% market share based on direct premiums written. American Family Insurance Group followed with 16.03%, Travelers Group had 8.81%, Farm Bureau Property & Casualty Group held 7.62%, and Allstate Insurance Group accounted for 6.44%.
