Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt (pictured above) has entered the 2026 race for governor, bringing an insurance-focused background to a crowded field of candidates.
Schmidt, a Republican, announced her candidacy as she prepares to conclude her second term as the state’s top insurance regulator. Schmidt has served as insurance commissioner since 2019 and was re-elected in 2022. Her tenure has included initiatives aimed at reducing regulatory costs and increasing returns to policyholders.
According to her campaign website, Schmidt’s administration has lowered the cost of doing business in the insurance sector by over $75 million and returned more than $145 million to consumers through regulatory actions and oversight.
Before taking office as a commissioner, Schmidt chaired the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee during her time in the Kansas Senate. Her legislative and regulatory experience has centered on healthcare access and insurance reform, according to a Best Wire report.
Schmidt’s campaign materials also highlight her earlier work in state government, where she helped identify inefficiencies in the Kansas Medical Assistance Program, resulting in a reported $391 million recovery for the state through administrative changes, the report said.
Schmidt has also discussed how her personal experience with breast cancer in 2023 has shaped her perspective on health insurance. According to the report, she has stated that the treatment process highlighted how complex insurance coverage can add difficulty to already serious health situations. She later said this experience reinforced her interest in simplifying access and navigation of health insurance for Kansans, the report said.
Schmidt’s entry into the race follows speculation earlier this year, when she responded to questions about her political plans amid news that Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins would run for insurance commissioner. Schmidt noted in a May 2025 BestWire interview that she was considering a run and was frequently asked about it by constituents.
Kansas’ general election will take place on November 3, 2026. Governor Laura Kelly, a Democrat, is ineligible to run again due to term limits. At least six other candidates have declared their intention to seek the office, according to Ballotpedia.
