Humana has partnered with the national Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) to support nursing students through mentorship, providing financial backing and strategic guidance for the initiative.

The program, set to begin in early 2026, will pair 50 nursing students with 50 experienced nurses employed at Humana.

Funding and partnership structure

Humana is contributing $110,000 for the first year to support NOBC's Mentoring for Success program, with annual funding of $90,000 planned thereafter.

As a founding partner, Humana will gain a leadership seat on the program's advisory board, helping shape its direction. The mentorship program will leverage NOBC's university partnerships and Humana's healthcare network to recruit participants. Virtual mentoring will be supported by secure technology for mentor-mentee matching, scheduling, communication, progress tracking, and resource sharing.

Humana employs more than 10,000 nurses, including many in its CenterWell health care services division. The program aims to address the national nursing shortage while providing leadership development for existing nurses. Mentorship is expected to build confidence, expand skill sets, and create pathways for nurses to serve in governance and board-level roles, strengthening decision-making and operational expertise.

What it means for the insurance sector

Investing in nurse leadership has direct relevance for the health insurance sector. A more skilled and strategically minded nursing workforce supports Humana’s care management and clinical operations, improving patient outcomes, reducing costly medical errors, and enhancing claims efficiency. Nurses trained in governance and leadership can better collaborate with insurance teams on utilization review, risk assessment, and quality assurance initiatives.

Over time, this could help insurers contain costs, optimize benefits programs, and improve member satisfaction, the company said.

Participating nurses will also have access to a micro-learning module, called Language and Communication in the Boardroom, designed to strengthen communication and effectiveness in governance settings.

This initiative helps prepare nurses for leadership roles that intersect with insurance operations, regulatory compliance, and strategic decision-making, supporting both workforce development and the broader healthcare insurance ecosystem.

Through this collaboration, Humana and NOBC aim to sustain a pipeline of skilled nursing professionals, enhancing healthcare outcomes while indirectly strengthening insurer capabilities in clinical oversight, risk management, and operational efficiency.
