Managing general agent Delos Insurance Solutions said it will expand its wildfire coverage across five southern California counties, adding 265,000 homes to its portfolio following improvements to its proprietary risk modeling technology.

The expansion increases Delos’s total coverage footprint to about 2.5 million homes across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. The MGA said the move reflects greater confidence in its models, which use satellite imagery and wildfire science to identify properties that pose lower risk despite being in wildfire-prone regions.

Founded in 2017 by aerospace engineers, Delos aims to provide insurance to homeowners in areas where many traditional insurers have withdrawn due to wildfire exposure. Its technology-driven underwriting approach assesses property-level risks, offering primary, secondary and seasonal home policies while incorporating mitigation strategies to help policyholders reduce losses.

Delos said its wildfire model has accurately predicted the extent of all major Californian fires over the past seven years. The company continues to enhance its data and analysis, which it said allows it to insure homes where traditional insurers find it challenging to provide coverage. The latest refinements, including more detailed wind data and information on suppression efficacy, are expected to further expand the MGA’s insurable footprint.

According to Delos, 65% of homes commonly classified as “high risk” by conventional models could be reclassified as medium or low risk under its system, offering potential price relief to many homeowners facing rising premiums or coverage restrictions. The upgraded model also incorporates data on “urban conflagration” potential, giving a more nuanced view of fire spread in developed areas.

Delos previously announced plans to expand its technology-based wildfire insurance offerings beyond California, supported by a $9 million fundraising round in late 2024. The company said it will launch high-value home and commercial property products as part of its next phase of growth.

The MGA’s expansion comes amid an ongoing insurance availability crisis in California’s property market, as several national and regional carriers scale back or pause new business in high-risk zones. Delos’ approach offers an alternative for risk distribution, blending advanced analytics with traditional underwriting to fill growing protection gaps across the state.
