Brown & Brown has announced the death of Robert Mathis, who served as the company's chief legal officer.

The Florida-based insurance brokerage disclosed the news in a statement but did not provide details on the cause of death.

Mathis joined Brown & Brown in April 2023 and held the chief legal officer position for nearly three years. The company trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BRO.

Powell Brown, president and chief executive officer, issued a statement following the announcement.

"Rob set the standard for judgment, integrity and humanity," Brown said. "He helped guide our company through pivotal moments with a rare combination of legal excellence and genuine kindness. We will miss his counsel, his friendship and his example. Our thoughts are with his loved ones."

Eileen Akerson, chief risk, regulatory and compliance counsel at Brown & Brown, will serve as interim chief legal officer. The company did not indicate a timeline for naming a permanent replacement.

Prior to joining Brown & Brown, Mathis spent more than 11 years at KBR, Inc., where he held the role of senior vice president of legal from December 2011 to March 2023. He was based in Houston, Texas during his tenure at the engineering and government services firm.

Mathis also served as general counsel at Lockard Group from January 2007 to November 2011. He was based in Palm Coast, Florida during that period.

Earlier in his career, Mathis held general counsel positions at Enron, overseeing legal operations in Europe from April 2002 to September 2006 and in India from April 2000 to April 2002. He worked as corporate legal counsel at United Breweries Ltd. in Bangalore, India from February 1995 to March 2000.

Mathis began his legal career as an associate at Holland & Knight LLP in Miami, where he worked from April 1988 to November 1993. His career in law spanned more than three decades across multiple industries and geographies.
