Mercury Insurance has released a list of the most affordable new trucks and SUVs to insure for 2025 as the truck and sport utility vehicle (SUV) segments continue to attract American consumers.
The list is intended to help consumers identify vehicles that could lower their insurance expenses amid rising costs nationwide.
Insurance premiums are impacted by factors such as claims frequency on similar models, repair costs and vehicle safety records. Mercury’s research and development team analyzed vehicles currently available at dealerships, focusing specifically on those with lower insurance costs.
“We understand that in the current climate, consumers are looking to save money on auto insurance, but we also know that many in the new-car market are looking to add a truck or SUV to their driveway,” said Chong Gao, director of product management R&D for Mercury. “The good news is that there’s a lot of variety in this year’s list for consumers with different budgets and lifestyles, from compact SUVs to larger midsize ones that can handle family duty.”
Among trucks, the most affordable models to insure include the Chevrolet Colorado LT, Chevrolet Silverado C3500, Ford Maverick and Ranger, Hyundai Santa Cruz SE, Toyota Tundra CrewMax, Ford F150, Toyota Tacoma, Ford F350 Super Duty, Dodge 1500/RAM Truck 1500, and GMC Canyon, according to the company.
Meanwhile, the SUVs with the lowest insurance costs include the Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Blazer, Kia Sportage, Honda Passport, Ford Escape, Kia Soul, Honda HR-V, Honda CR-V, and Kia Sorento.
In the US, SUVs generally carry higher insurance premiums compared to smaller passenger cars due to their larger size, higher repair costs, and increased risk of injury claims in accidents. However, insurance rates can vary significantly depending on the vehicle’s safety features, repair costs, and claims history. Models with better safety ratings and lower repair expenses typically receive more favorable insurance rates.
"Choosing a vehicle with utility doesn't have to break the bank, as any of these vehicles will help keep the cumulative cost of ownership down, which is something we have always emphasized at Mercury," Gao added.
