A Lloyd’s-linked military charity that has distributed £3.86 million in grants to 47 charities since 2010 is changing its name to Lloyd’s Veterans Charity (LVC), keeping its focus on supporting veterans and their families.
The organisation, previously known as Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund, said the rebrand is intended to make its purpose clearer across the London insurance market. It will continue awarding grants to non-profit organisations through an application and selection process.
“As we move from the background into the centre of our market’s awareness, the trustees felt that our historic brand, forged during the Napoleonic Wars, was no longer resonant among all the individuals of our community,” said Brigadier Edward Butler CBE DSO, chairman of the charity. “We do not turn our back on even a moment of our history, but we're looking ahead with a new name, and a look fit for the 21st century.”
“Lloyd’s Veterans Charity is a clear moniker which leaves no doubt as to our community and our purpose,” Butler added. “I encourage everyone in the London insurance market, whether you have ties to the military or simply wish to express your gratitude to those who have served, to lend us your support.”
LVC was formed in Lloyd’s coffee house in 1803 and has operated for 223 years, acting as a vehicle for charitable funds raised across the Lloyd’s market. It said it works with the Lloyd’s & City Branch of the Royal British Legion, the Lloyd’s Military Network, and other market-related groups.
The charity’s lead donor is the Corporation of Lloyd’s, with support also coming from managing agencies, broking firms and individuals.
Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund describes itself as focusing on mental health and employment needs linked to the transition into civilian life and said it supported 873 direct beneficiaries in 2023 through seven charity partners. Those partners include Scotty’s Little Soldiers and The Forces Employment Charity, alongside HighGround and Care After Combat, among others.
The rebrand comes within a wider Lloyd’s charity structure. Lloyd’s has said its charitable activity includes the Lloyd’s of London Foundation, Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund and the Lloyd’s Benevolent Fund. The Lloyd’s of London Foundation recorded £1.6 million in total charitable donations in 2024, with 9,000 volunteer hours and 28 charities supported globally.
“Whilst of course we all want Lloyd’s to remain the innovative insurance marketplace of the future, we have some very long traditions,” said Sir Charles Roxburgh, chairman of Lloyd’s. “Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund, now Lloyd’s Veterans Charity, is one of the finest of those extraordinary old institutions in our market. I’m proud to pledge the continued support of the Corporation of Lloyd’s to LVC through our annual contribution.”
