Nexus Underwriting has completed its acquisition of Sure Insurance Services, a managing general agent (MGA) specialising in medical tourism insurance products.
The deal has received regulatory approval, though financial terms were not disclosed.
Sure Insurance Services, established in 2003 by Alison Thornberry, provides coverage solutions for the medical travel sector across the UK, Australia and South Africa. The company will now operate under Millstream Underwriting, a Nexus subsidiary since 2015.
Thornberry and her team will continue with the business following the transaction. Rob Amati (pictured above), managing director of Millstream, will oversee the integration.
Amati said the company is "very pleased to welcome Alison and the Sure team into Millstream and the wider Nexus family." He noted that Sure's track record in medical travel insurance would support Millstream's focus on underwriting and claims services for brokers and policyholders.
The acquisition also aligns with the company's capacity provider objectives, Amati added, describing the goal as delivering "long-term profitable results."
Thornberry said she was "incredibly proud" of what the Sure team had built over the past two decades. She indicated that the move would allow the company to develop its medical travel and revisions offering while retaining its existing team and service standards.
"I'm delighted that joining Nexus will allow us to further enhance our specialist medical travel and revisions offering, support our partners and drive our growth," Thornberry said.
The Sure acquisition marks the latest in a series of expansion moves for Nexus. In October 2025, the company extended its trade credit operations into Italy, positioning itself in one of Lloyd's largest continental European markets.
Richard Marriage, CEO for the UK, Europe and international, described the Italian expansion as "another milestone in Nexus's growth journey." The company now employs more than 320 people across nine countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United States, the UAE and Malaysia.
The transaction also follows the launch of Arrowhead Intermediaries, Nexus' parent brand. Steve Boyd, CEO of Arrowhead Intermediaries, said the company was "thrilled to welcome Sure Insurance Services to our diverse platform for the global insurance marketplace."
