Vitality has entered into a new partnership with Boots that will give its health insurance members discounted access to the retailer's online weight-management service, with further primary care services expected to follow later this year.

The move highlights how UK insurers are pushing further into preventative and everyday healthcare amid rising demand for GLP-1 weight-loss drugs and continued pressure on NHS capacity.

Discounted access to Boots Online Doctor

From this spring, qualifying Vitality members will be able to access up to 25% off the Boots Online Doctor Weight Loss Service. The service offers prescription weight‑loss treatments, including GLP‑1 medications where clinically appropriate, alongside remote clinical supervision and structured support programmes.

The package includes a 10‑week weight‑loss programme focused on sustainable lifestyle and behavioural changes, app‑based progress tracking and a 12‑month aftercare programme once medication stops. Medicines can be delivered to members’ homes or collected from Boots pharmacies. Services will be provided in line with UK clinical guidelines and eligibility criteria.

The discount level will be tiered according to a member’s Vitality status – the insurer’s behaviour‑linked system under which members earn a higher status, and greater rewards, by engaging in physical activity and other healthy behaviours.

Vitality’s own research suggests that combining GLP‑1 medication with moderate exercise can reduce in‑hospital costs far more than medication alone. However, the same data indicate that a significant minority of patients reduce or stop exercising after starting GLP‑1 treatment, pointing to the need for ongoing behavioural support if benefits are to be sustained.

Insurer focuses on prevention and cost control

Vitality was the first UK health insurer to incorporate weight‑loss medication into an insurance‑linked programme in 2025. The Boots deal builds on that approach, positioning pharmacotherapy as one element within a broader, prevention‑orientated model of care.

“Prevention represents one of the greatest opportunities of our time to improve health outcomes at scale, extend longevity and reduce the long-term cost burden on society. Realising this, requires a fundamental shift in how health is approached across the system, including the role insurers play. This partnership with Boots is built on those foundations," said Neville Koopowitz, CEO of Vitality.

Meanwhile, Boots has been expanding its healthcare offering through its Online Doctor platform and in‑store health services, including weight‑management, vaccinations and health checks.

"This partnership will allow us to share our growing range of healthcare services with Vitality's members," said Jamie Kerruish, chief healthcare officer at Boots. "I look forward to expanding this partnership later this year to provide access to even more healthcare services available at Boots.”

Implications for the health insurance market

The tie‑up reflects a wider shift from purely episodic claims payment towards active management of chronic conditions such as obesity. GLP‑1 programmes may help reduce longer‑term claims linked to diabetes and cardiovascular disease, but they also introduce significant upfront drug and programme costs and raise questions around eligibility, duration of cover and clinical oversight.

Over time, Vitality and Boots plan to widen the partnership to include additional health and wellbeing services. The deal adds competitive pressure on rival providers to clarify their own approach to obesity treatment and to the integration of pharmacy‑led services within health insurance products.
