MetLife has entered the Irish employee benefits market with the launch of its Group Life insurance offering, making cover available to employers and employees in Ireland through a broker-only distribution model.

The company's Group Life cover provides financial protection for employees' families in the event of death, while also introducing the insurer's 360Health proposition to the Irish market. The value-added services include unlimited virtual GP access and a range of wellbeing and support services designed to assist employees and their families beyond the core insurance benefit.

An evolving market

The move places MetLife into an Irish employee benefits market that has been steadily evolving, with employers placing greater emphasis on structured benefits packages to support recruitment, retention and workforce wellbeing. Group life assurance remains one of the most widely adopted employee benefits in Ireland, particularly among medium-sized and large employers, often forming the foundation of broader benefits programmes alongside pensions, income protection and health-related services.

In recent years, the Irish market has seen a shift away from standalone protection products towards more holistic propositions. Employers are increasingly seeking benefits that combine financial protection with preventative and wellbeing support, driven by competition for talent, rising employee expectations and heightened awareness of mental and physical health in the workplace. Insurers have responded by embedding digital healthcare access, wellbeing tools and support services into traditional group risk products.

The company said that its decision to distribute its Group Life offering exclusively through brokers is aligned with the established market structure. The move also positions it to compete alongside existing group risk providers through adviser-led relationships. Broker distribution remains central to the Irish employee benefits landscape, with intermediaries playing a key role in advising employers on benefit design, cost control and employee engagement.

Years of experience brought to the Irish market

Globally, MetLife operates in more than 40 markets and brings over 150 years of insurance experience to the Irish offering.

While the Group Life launch represents a new product line locally, MetLife is not new to Ireland. The group already employs close to 200 staff across its European head office in Dublin and its campus in Galway. The expansion into employee benefits is positioned as the next stage in MetLife’s long-term commitment to the Irish market, underpinned by ongoing investment in local capability and innovation.

Wayne Gibbons, Ireland Country lead at MetLife, said the launch reflects a broader view of group protection, combining financial reassurance with practical support for employees and their families at critical moments.

MetLife Europe d.a.c., trading as MetLife, is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.
