Hiscox has appointed Matthew Budd as group head of technical claims, a newly created position aimed at strengthening the specialist insurer’s handling of complex and high-value claims across multiple lines of business.
Budd, who will be based in London and report to group claims director Steve Parry, brings more than three decades of experience in claims management. He joins from AIG, where he led the group’s aerospace claims, and previously held senior positions at Talbot Underwriting, including head of claims and head of wordings and contracts and delegated authorities. Earlier in his career, he was aviation claims manager at XL London Market.
In his new role, Budd will oversee Hiscox’s technical claims operations as the group pursues growth ambitions and seeks to deliver more innovative claims solutions for clients.
The appointment comes as insurers across the market place greater emphasis on specialist claims leadership to navigate an increasingly complex risk environment. Rising loss severity, cross-border exposures, and evolving litigation trends are driving carriers to bolster technical expertise and operational efficiency within claims teams.
For global specialty insurers, claims expertise is becoming a competitive differentiator in winning and retaining large corporate accounts. Clients in sectors such as aviation, energy, marine, and financial lines often place as much value on the speed, accuracy, and expertise of claims handling as they do on coverage terms or pricing.
By adding senior technical leadership, insurers aim to deliver market-leading service, support complex risk solutions, and build long-term client trust, which are key factors in a competitive and capacity-constrained specialty market.
In recent months, several major specialty carriers have created or expanded senior technical claims roles, particularly in London, to align with growth strategies and address rising claims complexity.
