RSA has introduced a new Forces Family Support Policy, timed with the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
The announcement follows RSA’s signing of the Armed Forces Covenant in January 2023, in which the company pledged to ensure that individuals who serve or have served in His Majesty’s Armed Forces, as well as their families, are treated fairly in the workplace. The policy has been developed by RSA’s Armed Forces Employee Resource Group as part of that ongoing commitment.
The policy is intended to support employees who have immediate family members currently serving in the Armed Forces or in the resettlement period after leaving service. It offers up to five days of paid leave per calendar year and allows for temporary changes to working arrangements if required.
RSA said that families of Armed Forces personnel often face challenges related to deployments, training activities and relocations, which can occur with little notice and place pressure on family and work responsibilities.
Citing research by Barclays, RSA noted that 66% of military spouses reported a negative impact on their careers due to their partner’s service. A third of respondents had either left a job or reduced their working hours, while 15% had accepted roles below their experience level.
The company said the new policy is aimed at helping address some of these pressures among affected employees.
Jon Cope, managing director of UK Specialty Lines and sponsor of the Armed Forces Employee Resource Group, described the policy as a significant development in extending support to the Armed Forces community at RSA. He said it reflects the organisation’s commitment to recognising the demands placed on families and reinforcing the company’s responsibilities under the Armed Forces Covenant.
Drew Jeacock, head of engagement at the Greater London Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, said the initiative provides practical support to those who serve and have served, as well as their families. He viewed it as a demonstration of commitment and said it sets an example for other organisations.
