Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM), part of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, has named Niala Butt (pictured above) as head of casualty claims for the UK.

The appointment, which takes effect immediately, will see Butt based in London and reporting to Nik Mahida, head of third-party claims for the UK and MENA regions.

Butt will be responsible for overseeing the casualty claims team and supporting the firm’s objective of delivering value across the insurance claims lifecycle. Her remit will include trend analysis, improving operational efficiency, and engaging with stakeholders, including direct work with insureds.

Her appointment follows the promotion of Carly Marston to head of FINPRO claims in February and marks the second senior female leadership change in LSM’s claims division in recent months. The company said Butt brings significant industry experience and that her presence is expected to support the evolution of its claims proposition.

LSM also said that the structure of its claims leadership team is intended to reflect the diversity of its clients.

Butt joins from CNA Hardy, where she held the role of casualty claims manager. Her insurance career spans over 28 years and includes roles in liability and property underwriting, medical malpractice, claims operations and international risk. She has also been active in market initiatives, serving on the Lloyd’s Market Association’s General Liability Committee, leading the Ethnic Women in Insurance Network, and contributing to Chartered Insurance Institute committees focused on diversity and innovation.

Her appointment comes as LSM undertakes a broader leadership restructure in its UK and MENA operations. The company has introduced three new underwriting divisions—marine & aviation, specialty, and property—in a move aimed at aligning with evolving broker and client requirements. Meghan Walker will lead marine & aviation, Mike Burle will head specialty, and recruitment is ongoing for the property lead.

LSM has also made internal changes within its Delegated Authority Practice, which continues to be led by Lewis Edwards. A new auto-follow segment is being introduced to support digital and algorithmic underwriting initiatives.
