HDI Global has named Nikita Tikhonov as head of marine global risk, effective September 1, 2025. He succeeds Felix Cassau, who is leaving to take on a role at Hannover Re. Tikhonov (pictured) will report to Carsten Shulte, head of marine underwriting, and will be based at the company's Hannover headquarters. He will lead a team of five professionals responsible for the company's marine operations.

Tikhonov began his career as a Marine and Property underwriter in Russia before joining HDI Global in 2018. He initially developed a portfolio in Marine Cargo and Accident & Health insurance and has since supported underwriters in HDI Global branch offices worldwide, particularly in the Automotive sector.

On his appointment, Tikhonov said he was grateful for the opportunity and looked forward to guiding the Marine Global Risk Hubs in line with HDI Global’s strategic objectives. Schulte described Tikhonov as bringing expertise and a fresh perspective to the role and said he expected him to maintain HDI Global’s position as a partner for clients and brokers while advancing the Marine Global Risk agenda.

The UK marine insurance market

The UK marine insurance market is a significant part of the global sector, covering hull and machinery, cargo, liability, and offshore energy risks. In 2024, the market was valued at around US$1.27 billion, with moderate growth expected in the coming years.

The market includes traditional insurers and specialist providers, with Lloyd’s of London and the International Underwriting Association among the major participants. Insurers are navigating challenges including regulatory changes, geopolitical uncertainty, and the increasing need for digital tools. At the same time, emerging risks such as cyber liability and environmental exposure are creating opportunities for growth.
