Aon has introduced a new risk capital transportation and logistics vertical as part of a leadership transition within its commercial risk business. The vertical, aimed at strengthening the firm’s specialised risk management offerings, will be chaired by Lee Meyrick (pictured left) until his planned retirement at the end of 2026.

The announcement forms part of a phased transition that will also see Phil Smaje (pictured right) appointed as global industry specialty leader for transportation and logistics effective October 1, 2025.

Meyrick, who has held global specialty leadership roles at Aon for the past eight years following senior positions at XL Catlin and AIG, will oversee the establishment of the new vertical. The initiative focuses on providing risk capital solutions to transportation and logistics companies, including data-driven insights, alternative risk transfer, and reinsurance strategies to address challenges such as supply chain disruptions and economic uncertainty.

Meyrick said his focus in the coming months will be to support a smooth transition while advancing the capabilities of the new vertical.

“It’s been a privilege to lead such a talented team and contribute to Aon’s growth in this space,” said Meyrick. “I’m excited to support Phil and the business in my new role as chair and ensure a smooth and successful transition.”

Meanwhile, Smaje, who joined Aon in 2023 and currently serves as chief broking officer for transportation and logistics, will take on operational leadership of the specialty. His industry experience includes senior positions at WTW, Piiq Risk Partners, and Ardonagh Specialty.

“I’m honoured to take on this role and build on the strong foundation Lee has created,” said Smaje. “Transportation and logistics is a dynamic, important, and evolving sector, and I look forward to working with our global teams to drive innovation for our clients and deliver outstanding results for them.”

According to Aon, the sector faces evolving risks and growing demand for tailored solutions.

“These appointments reflects our commitment to recruiting, developing and promoting exceptional talent,” said Joe Peiser, CEO of commercial risk. “Phil brings deep market expertise and a strong track record of leadership. I’m confident he will continue to elevate our transportation and logistics offering and deliver outstanding value to our clients.”

The creation of the risk capital transportation and logistics vertical underscores Aon’s strategy to build specialised services for industries with complex risk profiles, while ensuring continuity of leadership during the transition.
