Howden Re has announced the launch of its operations in Iberia with two senior appointments.

David Santos (pictured above) will serve as managing director of Howden Re Iberia, while Antonio Pombo will take on the role of director. Both executives will be based in Madrid and are tasked with establishing the company’s reinsurance proposition in the region.

Santos and Pombo both join Howden Re from Nacional Re, where Santos was commercial director and Pombo was senior client manager for Iberia. Their experience spans the Spanish, Portuguese, and Andorran reinsurance markets, where they have managed client relationships and developed market expertise.

Howden Group has an established history in the Iberian market, particularly in insurance broking and its managing general agent operations.

“Joining Howden Re at this pivotal moment is an exciting opportunity. Iberia is a dynamic and increasingly sophisticated market, and clients are looking for partners who combine global reach with deep local understanding,” Santos said.

Santos also emphasized the company’s entrepreneurial culture and commitment to long-term investment in the region, expressing confidence in the firm’s ability to deliver client-focused reinsurance solutions.

Tobias Andersson, head of Continental Europe for Howden Re, commented on the expansion, stating, “We are thrilled to launch Howden Re in Iberia, a key milestone in our ongoing expansion across Europe and investment in our growing International team. David and Antonio bring exceptional client insight and deep market expertise, which will be critical as we build our capabilities in the region.”

In addition to its Iberian expansion, Howden Re has recently launched a Hong Kong-focused reinsurance broking platform, appointing Roy Wong as managing director to lead treaty development for clients in Hong Kong. This move is part of a broader regional strategy, with Howden Re also establishing a new office in Taiwan and planning further hires in Asia to deepen its presence and expertise in the region.

Howden Re has also expanded its Capital & Operational Solutions Practice, appointing Paul Ogni as director to lead the development of a claims management advisory service within the practice.

Recent hires for Howden Re’s capital solutions division include Alexander Roth as managing director and head of capital and operational solutions, Tom Finch as managing director and head of prospective solutions, and Alexandre Veber as director of broking and structured solutions.
