Five Canadian insurers earn CSIO Compliance Certification

The Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO) has awarded compliance certification to APRIL Canada and APRIL Marine, Echelon Insurance, Lambton Mutual Insurance Company and Nova Mutual Insurance Company for eliminating all non-standard coverage codes, known as Z-Codes, from their data exchange systems.

The move ensures these insurers now exclusively use CSIP Standard codes when transmitting coverage information to Broker Management Systems (BMS). Standardized codes allow brokers to identify the details of a policy without logging into individual insurer portals or manually renaming codes, resulting in more accurate reporting, more targeted marketing and a more seamless experience for clients.

Kathryn Sinclair, president and CEO of CSIO, said the certification demonstrates the insurers’ commitment to data standards and industry connectivity. By relying on Standard codes, brokers can interpret coverage information with confidence, improving operational efficiency and enabling better-informed insurance solutions for clients.

CSIO provides ongoing support to insurers seeking compliance certification. Its Standards Maintenance Request (MR) process allows insurers to propose new Standard codes instead of creating their own Z-Codes, which can be inconsistent and less efficient. These requests are reviewed by CSIO’s National Standards Working Group, which meets regularly to evolve Data Standards and ensure they align with changing business requirements.

The elimination of Z-Codes represents a significant step for the broader Canadian insurance market. In 2025 alone, CSIO helped insurers remove roughly 1,200 non-standard codes from their systems. For brokers, this translates into smoother data integration, reduced errors, and faster access to policy information, which can improve client service and streamline workflows.

Industry experts noted that standardization is increasingly critical as insurers expand digital capabilities and integrate with third-party platforms. The adoption of CSIO Standards positions both insurers and brokers to operate more efficiently, respond more quickly to client needs, and support the ongoing modernization of Canada’s property and casualty insurance sector.
