The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) has revoked the life insurance and accident & sickness insurance agent license of Donald Newton Mason, following allegations that he misappropriated client funds.

According to the regulator, Mason persuaded two vulnerable consumers to provide him with money, allegedly for investment, and failed to repay or account for the funds.

Mason did not request a hearing before the Financial Services Tribunal or contest FSRA’s proposed revocation.

FSRA said the order is part of its ongoing efforts to protect consumers and uphold integrity in Ontario’s insurance sector. Insurance agents handle sensitive financial matters, and misappropriation not only threatens individual policyholders but also erodes confidence in the broader market. By revoking Mason’s licence, FSRA is signaling that misconduct will not be tolerated and that regulatory oversight remains central to maintaining a trustworthy insurance environment.

This action follows other high-profile enforcement moves by FSRA in the province. Earlier this year, the regulator imposed an $80,000 administrative penalty on Gurpreet Singh Ghuman for acting as a life insurance agent without a valid license, citing violations of the Insurance Act.

In a separate case, FSRA challenged the license renewal of insurance agent and mutual fund representative Ishaan Ahuja, who was found to have conducted business without a valid licence and made false statements on his application. Ahuja’s license was ultimately granted conditionally, with supervisory terms and a $10,000 administrative penalty.

Together, these cases underscore FSRA’s dual focus on consumer protection and market integrity. Consumers are encouraged to verify the licensing status of agents and report any suspicious activity, while insurers are reminded of the importance of robust oversight and compliance measures.
