The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) is seeking new members to join its Consumer Advisory Panel, with a focus on ensuring the voices of insurance customers are represented in key regulatory decisions.
The panel provides input on policies that directly impact Ontario’s insurance markets, including auto, life, and health insurance - sectors that together serve millions of policyholders. FSRA said the new appointments will help the regulator better understand the experiences of consumers dealing with insurers, brokers, and claims processes, and ensure that fairness, transparency, and accessibility remain central to its oversight.
Co-chair Lucy Becker said the panel plays a critical role in reflecting the perspectives of insurance consumers when FSRA evaluates new rules, develops market conduct guidance, or responds to emerging industry issues. She added that the regulator is seeking individuals who can contribute meaningful insights to help FSRA strengthen consumer protection and confidence in the province’s insurance system.
Panel members are appointed for two-year terms and engage with FSRA leadership through general meetings and working groups. Their feedback informs policy decisions that shape how insurance products are sold, how claims are managed, and how consumers are treated across the insurance value chain.
FSRA noted that candidates will be selected based on their knowledge and experience, particularly in areas tied to insurance regulation and consumer advocacy. Diversity in geography, demographics, and lived experience will also be a factor to ensure broad representation of Ontario’s insurance consumers.
The Consumer Advisory Panel has played an increasing role in FSRA’s insurance oversight since its establishment, contributing to consultations on fair treatment of customers, product suitability standards, and disclosure practices. The regulator said expanding the panel is part of its ongoing effort to align industry conduct with public expectations and strengthen consumer trust in the insurance market.
