CHU has launched its Green Grant Program, focused on sustainability projects in residential strata properties. The initiative, announced on Nov. 12, will distribute $50,000 in grants in its first year to provide funding for body corporates and property owners undertaking projects with environmental or social objectives.

The Green Grant Program is available to holders of CHU’s Residential Strata Insurance who have maintained continuous coverage for at least three years. The program is intended to provide funding for strata communities, including those with limited resources, to access sustainability upgrades. Grants will be allocated to projects that reduce environmental impact, improve energy efficiency, or involve community participation.

Kimberley Jonsson, chief executive officer of CHU, said the program is part of the company’s ongoing focus on sustainability in the strata sector. “We want to empower body corporates and property owners to implement sustainable initiatives that reduce their environmental footprint and improve energy efficiency, ultimately supporting healthier strata buildings,” Jonsson said.

Focus on environmental and social impact

Applicants for the Green Grant Program will be evaluated by a panel of industry experts. Projects must demonstrate environmental or social benefits, addressing at least one of the following pillars:

  • Environmental: energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation
  • Social: community well-being, accessibility, safety

The application period closes on March 27, 2026, with final selections and grant announcements scheduled for June 2026.

The program is part of CHU’s sustainability strategy, which includes participation as a signatory to the Strata Community Association’s (SCA) Sustainability Charter and reference to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). CHU has selected eight of the UN’s 17 goals, including gender equality, reduced inequalities, sustainable infrastructure, and climate action.

Integration with global sustainability frameworks

CHU’s approach to sustainability includes measures beyond grant funding. The company has implemented internal policies to achieve gender balance, reporting 62% female representation in its workforce in 2022. CHU has also implemented measures to reduce operational emissions, with 60% of its vehicle fleet now hybrid or electric, and participates in ecosystem restoration efforts through partnerships with organisations such as The Forktree Project.

The company’s sustainability charter is organised around four principles: minimising environmental impact, addressing people and community well-being, considering long-term outcomes in investment, and building partnerships with other organisations. These principles reference the objectives of the UN SDGs, which address issues such as climate change, responsible consumption, and inclusive economic growth.

Industry collaboration and future direction

The Green Grant Program is consistent with a trend in Australia’s strata sector to incorporate sustainability into business operations. The SCA has encouraged members to use the UN SDGs as a framework for industry development, addressing economic, social, and environmental priorities. By funding projects that address these goals, CHU seeks to participate in sustainability initiatives within strata communities. The initiative is part of broader industry activity to address sustainability challenges at both local and global levels.

As the application process for the Green Grant Program begins, CHU and its partners plan to identify projects that provide measurable outcomes for strata communities and contribute to sustainability practices in the insurance sector.
