Australia’s insurance industry is experiencing a period of activity, with several underwriting agencies unveiling new products and announcing senior appointments aimed at strengthening their market positions and expanding service offerings.

Lion Underwriting appoints new head for professional lines

Lion Underwriting has named Chris Edwards as its new head of professional lines, marking a strategic move to bolster its professional indemnity and related offerings.

Edwards, who previously held the role of executive general manager at Quanta Insurance Group, brings more than two decades of experience to the role.

His appointment follows Lion’s recent efforts to position itself for further growth, a direction set by the late founder Kurt Nilsen.

Nathan Hepple, director at Lion Underwriting, highlighted Edwards’ industry reputation and expertise.

“I’ve known Chris professionally for over seven years; his track record is impressive and clear. Through his career to date, he’s attracted the support of more than 10 Lloyd’s syndicates, some of which potentially would never have stepped foot on Australian soil without Chris at their side locally,” he said.

Edwards will oversee Lion’s suite of professional lines products, which include professional indemnity, directors and officers (D&O), cyber, management liability, and medical malpractice.

He emphasised the importance of communication in the insurance process.

“We work to ensure all parties are protected from the outset, and in order to do that, communication is paramount so there’s clarity and no surprises. Anyone can place an insurance program, but the real test is when insureds need us in their most vulnerable moment… that is, when they need to make a claim,” Edwards said.

Lion’s professional lines team also includes Dylan Webb, Yvonne McCauley, and Fiona McKenzie, who recently joined from the UK.

Agile introduces construction underwriting division

Meanwhile, Agile has launched a new construction underwriting division, appointing Gordon McNab as head of construction.

The move is part of Agile’s strategy to expand into the contract works insurance segment, with support from its Lloyd’s Syndicate AUS2427 and a panel of Lloyd’s partners.

McNab, who has more than 35 years of experience in contract works and engineering underwriting, will lead the development of Agile’s construction insurance products.

“Joining Agile means working alongside a professional team of underwriters who are passionate about innovation and client service,” he said. “I’m excited to bring my experience to help shape a new line of business and to share the knowledge I’ve built over the years.”

Agile CEO Robin Barham commented: “He brings the kind of deep technical knowledge, pragmatism, and mentoring spirit that perfectly fits Agile’s culture. He’ll play a key role in delivering the underwriting precision and broker support Agile is known for.”

The construction offering joins Agile’s existing portfolio, which covers accident and health, aviation, casualty, cyber, drones, financial lines, marine, and property.

Agile distributes its products through licensed brokers and coverholders, both directly and on a reinsurance or wholesale basis.

Hutch Underwriting strengthens product development team

Hutch Underwriting has expanded its leadership team with the appointment of Matthew Scarra as head of product development.

Scarra’s experience spans more than 20 years across financial lines, industrial special risks, liability, contract works, and business packages. He also holds a Diploma of Financial Services.

At Hutch, Scarra will focus on developing products designed for ease of use by brokers and clarity for clients. He is expected to leverage emerging technologies, including APIs, automation, and artificial intelligence, to enhance the efficiency of insurance processes.

With this addition, Hutch aims to accelerate its product development pipeline and continue its growth trajectory in the Australian market.
