The NRMA In Town program has launched a series of community engagement activities in Lismore and nearby areas from Sept. 13-21.

The initiative is designed to provide practical support and foster connections with residents through a range of free events and local partnerships.

Community engagement program visits Lismore region

The program opened on Sept. 13 with a community day at the Lismore Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), featuring complimentary vehicle safety inspections by NRMA patrols, a gymnastics demonstration by PCYC, and a community barbecue.

Throughout the week, NRMA volunteers will deliver mechanical repairs at local farms as part of the Outback Links initiative and undertake maintenance work at the Casino Neighbourhood Centre.

Additional activities include the NRMA Science & Road Safety program at Lismore South Public School and engagement at the Lismore Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout, sponsored by NRMA, where fan-day events will be held.

Rob Giltinan, NRMA director of policy and public affairs, noted the importance of providing direct assistance to the community.

“Lismore has shown remarkable resilience in recent years following extreme weather conditions, and the NRMA staff and volunteers will be here to help out our members and the community where we can,” he said.

A century of insurance and disaster response

NRMA Insurance, which operates under Insurance Australia Group (IAG), is reflecting on 100 years of service since its establishment in 1925.

Initially formed to support motorists, the insurer expanded into home insurance within its first year and introduced several industry innovations, including instalment payment options and simplified policy language.

By the 1950s, NRMA Insurance had issued over 500,000 comprehensive car insurance policies and advocated for road safety reforms such as mandatory seatbelt use.

The company’s experience with major natural disasters, including the 1989 Newcastle earthquake and the 1999 Sydney hailstorm, led to changes in catastrophe response and support for building code improvements.

NRMA Insurance has continued to provide immediate relief to customers affected by severe weather, including cash payments and temporary accommodation.

In the past decade, the insurer has processed thousands of claims related to events such as the Black Summer bushfires and has supported communities through helicopter missions and emergency workshops.

Since 2024, IAG reports that NRMA Insurance has responded to over 1.6 million requests for assistance and delivered hundreds of disaster preparedness workshops in partnership with the Red Cross.

Strategic direction and centenary campaign

To mark its centenary, NRMA Insurance has launched a new brand campaign, “The Lighthouse,” which highlights its commitment to being “A Help Company.”

The campaign, developed with Accenture Song and Initiative Media, will be distributed across digital, print, and outdoor channels.

Looking forward, IAG plans to further integrate technology such as telematics to promote safer driving, expand digital claims services, and enhance its advocacy for climate resilience.

The group also continues to support government-led disaster mitigation efforts, including the Disaster Ready Fund, which allocates $200 million annually for resilience projects.
