NRMA Insurance has renewed and broadened its partnership with Surfing Australia through a three-year agreement aimed at increasing access to the sport at both junior and community levels.

As part of the arrangement, the insurer will become platinum partner of SurfGroms, Teen Groms, Seas The Day, and the RISE Women’s Program.

These initiatives are designed to give children entry-level surf safety skills, provide teenagers with more advanced training opportunities, and support female participation across recreational and competitive surfing.

The deal continues NRMA Insurance’s involvement as presenting partner of the Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final, regarded as the country’s leading club surfing competition.

Expanded agreement covers key participation programs

Surfing Australia chief executive officer Chris Mater said the expanded agreement underscores the role of insurance industry support in community sport.

“From young groms learning water safety for the first time, to women stepping into the surf community with confidence, this support is helping us build a stronger, more inclusive future for Australian surfing,” he said.

Support for youth and women in surfing

Programs covered by the partnership include:

  • Seas The Day – an annual festival in Kingscliff, New South Wales, that offers lessons, workshops, and panel sessions aimed at increasing female involvement in surfing.
  • RISE Women’s Program – focused on pathways for women in boardrider clubs, coaching, and leadership roles.
  • SurfGroms and Teen Groms – national junior programs that combine safe learn-to-surf experiences with skill development for high school students.

Luke Farrell, executive manager for partnerships and business excellence at NRMA Insurance, said the partnership helps the insurer connect with local communities.

“Surfing plays a pivotal role in building meaningful connections in local regions throughout the country, an important foundation in building stronger, safer, and more resilient communities,” he said.

Growth opportunities for the sport

Australia has more than 250 boardrider clubs and continues to see rising demand for youth and women’s programs.

Organisers expect the insurer’s continued support to expand the reach of existing initiatives while maintaining backing for flagship competitions, including the Australian Boardriders Battle and regional qualifying events in New South Wales.

NRMA Insurance marks centenary

The agreement comes after NRMA Insurance marked its 100th year with a new campaign called The Lighthouse, part of its brand platform “A Help Company.”

The campaign includes a refreshed creative strategy featuring digital, print and outdoor advertising.
