Two appointments have been announced around the Australian insurance industry.
Ansvar Insurance has expanded its leadership team, appointing Vanessa Freitas (pictured) as business development director for the Northern Region. Freitas brings a background in broking. Her new role will focus on supporting brokers and clients throughout the region.
Freitas said she was drawn to Ansvar due to its commitment to supporting organisations that serve vulnerable groups. “For me, it’s not just about insurance policies – it’s about safeguarding the people and organisations out there doing good every day. I’m proud to be part of a company that combines professional excellence with a genuine commitment to making a difference,” she said.
In addition to her professional experience, Freitas is involved with InTouch, an organisation that assists migrant and refugee women affected by family violence.
She emphasised the importance of relationship-building in the insurance sector. “Always stay positive and build genuine relationships – not just contacts. That mindset has opened doors, created collaborations, and helped me grow both personally and professionally,” Freitas said.
Freitas also shared her perspective on what brokers seek in an insurance partner.
“As a former broker myself, I believe brokers value partners who understand their clients’ industries and challenges – those who are responsive, reliable, and genuinely invested in their success. It’s all about trust, clear communication, and consistent support,” she said.
She added that her primary focus will be on engaging with brokers and clients to understand their evolving needs and deliver relevant solutions.
In the legal sector, Sparke Helmore has announced the addition of Patrick Tuohey as a partner in its specialty lines insurance team, effective Oct. 27.
Tuohey specialises in professional indemnity insurance law, representing a range of professionals including solicitors, barristers, accountants, and real estate agents. His practice covers both large and small claims in Victorian courts and federal jurisdictions, and he regularly provides coverage advice to insurers.
Tuohey is based in Melbourne, joining from Colin Biggers & Paisley. He is joined by special counsel Hilary Stokes.
Malcolm Cameron, specialty lines practice group Leader, commented: “We are excited to welcome Patrick to Sparke Helmore, a recognised expert in professional indemnity. We have a strong track record in New South Wales in this area, and Patrick joining us deepens our coverage into Victoria and nationally, allowing us to support our client base more effectively.”
Tuohey stated that joining a firm recognised for its collaborative environment and clear growth strategy was a significant factor in his decision.
“Joining Sparke Helmore allows me to build on my strong relationships in the industry, to provide excellent service to my clients, and play a key role in expanding the firm’s professional indemnity practice,” he said.
