The Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA) recently concluded its annual national conference, recognising both emerging and established professionals in the insurance law sector.

The event, held in Melbourne, combined awards presentations with a new single-day conference format, drawing attention to current issues and regulatory trends affecting the insurance industry.

Awards highlight contributions across career stages

During the conference, AILA presented the Young Professionals Public Speaking Competition award to Simone Snell (pictured), a solicitor from Wotton Kearney in Brisbane.

Snell’s presentation focused on the investigation and prosecution of fraudulent claims under Queensland law.

Other finalists included Yasemin Sargin of Colin Biggers & Paisley and Connor Wright of the Federal Court of Australia, who were recognised for their strong performances.

Reflecting on the competition, Geraldine Gray of the Victorian Bar noted the high standard set by all participants.

“Each of the finalists excelled in their presentations, and we judges found it very difficult to make a selection,” she said. “I was just completely taken aback by the grasp of the law each presenter had in their particular areas and the interesting issues they presented, and the solutions suggested – they all did a wonderful job.”

AILA also acknowledged two industry veterans for their longstanding service.

Angus Kench, vice president at Liberty Specialty Markets, received Life Membership for his contributions to expanding the association’s reach.

Ray Giblett, a partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, was awarded the 2025 Insurance Law Prize for his work in insurtech and his ongoing influence on industry thought leadership and regulatory change.

“These awards are our chance to recognise the exceptional talent and dedication within the Australian insurance community,” said AILA president Melanie Quixley. “It’s inspiring to see both emerging professionals and seasoned experts driving innovation and setting the standard for excellence in our industry.”

Conference format focuses on regulatory and industry trends

This year’s conference marked a shift in approach, with AILA introducing a streamlined, one-day format under the banner “Insurance Fast Forward.”

The event featured a series of keynote addresses and panel discussions, culminating in an industry dinner at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The conference opened with a keynote from the Honourable Justice Michael Osborne of the Supreme Court of Victoria, who discussed judicial approaches to expediting insurance dispute resolution.

A subsequent panel brought together representatives from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA), and general counsels from major insurers.

The discussion focused on compliance and enforcement, highlighting regulatory priorities currently shaping the insurance sector.

Additional sessions addressed workforce development, litigation funding, changes in financial lines claims management, and responses to cyber risk.

The program was designed to reflect the evolving landscape of the insurance industry and provide practical insights for professionals across the sector.

Lucy Terracall, conference chair and AILA Victoria state president, emphasised the importance of diverse perspectives at the event.

“Securing these speakers for the conference was a top priority because regulatory compliance and enforcement agendas impact every single participant in the insurance sector, whether it’s lawyers, underwriters, brokers, loss adjusters, or claims managers,” she said.

Terracall also noted that AILA’s established reputation contributed to the strong participation from industry leaders.
