The California Insurance Wholesalers Association (CIWA) has announced the establishment of the CIWA Future Matt Abram Scholarship, created in memory of Matthew Abram (pictured above), an insurance professional recognized for his contributions to the industry.
The scholarship aims to support emerging professionals in the property and casualty insurance sector. Recipients will receive complimentary registration to CIWA’s 2026 Annual Meeting, Summer Forum, and Future Fall Event.
The award also covers travel expenses, including airfare, hotel accommodations, and a daily meal stipend. In addition, recipients will be paired with a CIWA Future mentor for monthly coaching sessions throughout 2026.
“This scholarship is not only about honoring Matt’s life, but also about investing in the future leaders of our industry,” said Jack Else, CIWA Future Committee chair. Else said that the program is intended to create opportunities for young professionals to learn, grow, and carry forward the values Abram represented, such as leadership, collaboration, and commitment to people.
The CIWA Future Matt Abram Scholarship is open to professionals currently working in the property and casualty insurance industry on the West Coast, as well as those employed by a CIWA member company.
Applicants do not need to be employed by a CIWA member company to qualify. Applications are due by Nov. 14, with the recipient to be notified on Dec. 1. The recipient will also be recognized during CIWA’s Annual Meeting in 2026.
In recent months, CIWA has introduced two new initiatives to further support the property and casualty insurance sector. The CIWA Women initiative was established to promote the development and advancement of women in the industry, offering networking, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities.
Alongside this, the association launched an Insurtech Committee, which brings together technology professionals, wholesalers, and carriers to explore how new technological applications can enhance underwriting, distribution, and customer experience in the insurance sector.
Earlier this year, CIWA also launched its first internship program, designed to provide college students with hands-on experience in the excess and surplus lines insurance sector. The program offers professional development, networking opportunities, and exposure to industry operations through participation in CIWA events.
