As the summer wedding season approaches, Travelers is drawing attention to the role of wedding insurance amid rising event costs and recurring claims patterns.
According to the insurer, vendor-related issues remained the leading cause of wedding insurance claims in 2024 for the fourth consecutive year, accounting for 27% of all paid claims. Other frequent claim categories included illness or injury at 24%, extreme weather at 22%, and property damage at 15%.
“Soon-to-be-weds already have enough to worry about leading up to their big day,” said Deidre LeBlanc, vice president of specialty lines for personal insurance at Travelers. “By understanding the most common mishaps, they can be better prepared to handle unexpected challenges.”
Travelers noted that as weddings continue to grow in cost, insurance may serve as a financial safeguard against unanticipated disruptions. A report from wedding planning company Zola projected that the average cost of weddings will rise for the third year in a row, adding financial exposure to events that can already be logistically complex.
Data from Time also shows that the average US wedding cost climbed from $29,000 in 2023 to $33,000 in 2024, an increase of 13.8%.
This trend comes amid broader growth in the global wedding insurance market. The sector was valued at approximately $1.25 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $2.17 billion by 2033, according to The Market Intelligence. Analysts project a compound annual growth rate of 6.35% during that time, reflecting sustained interest in coverage for wedding-related exposures.
Military deployments have also been cited as a reason for claims, with unexpected service-related obligations resulting in wedding postponements or cancellations. In 2023, such situations accounted for approximately 6% of all claims filed with Travelers.
Additional sources of disruption include mishaps involving wedding attire, misplaced rings, or other unplanned events. These contributed to 5% of Travelers’ claims in the prior year, according to the company’s data, indicating the range of incidents that can occur even with careful planning.
Travelers highlighted that its coverage extends to supplementary expenses that may arise due to these issues. Policies may reimburse costs for damaged or spoiled items such as wedding cakes and catering, or replace malfunctioning equipment for DJs and other entertainment vendors.
