Fortegra Insurance UK joins ABI

Fortegra is expected to add specialist expertise to ABI's membership base

Fortegra Insurance UK joins ABI

Specialty insurer Fortegra Insurance UK has become the latest member of the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Part of the US-based Fortegra Group, the insurer provides specialist insurance and risk management solutions either directly or through managing general agents (MGAs), agents and broker partners. Since establishing its UK and European operations in 2018, Fortegra has focused on collaboration and tailored product development, carving out a position in segments often underserved by traditional carriers.

Joining the ABI brings Fortegra into an organisation that represents more than 300 members spanning general insurance, life, pensions and protection. The ABI works with government, regulators, consumer groups and NGOs to highlight the sector’s economic role, influence policy and improve public understanding of insurance.

For Fortegra, it offers a platform to engage with peers and contribute to shaping debates around regulatory reform, consumer outcomes and resilience.

Specialty insurers in the UK market

The timing of the move is significant. Specialty insurers and MGAs are becoming increasingly important in the UK market, offering bespoke products in areas ranging from consumer protection to commercial risks that demand agile underwriting and distribution models. Membership of the ABI ensures these perspectives are represented alongside those of larger composite carriers, particularly as regulators focus on fair value, transparency and innovation.

Mark Figes, CEO of Fortegra Insurance UK, described ABI membership as a milestone in the company’s growth journey. He said the move reflects Fortegra’s commitment to the UK market, while providing an opportunity to share insights and collaborate with the wider industry on challenges such as customer engagement, regulatory change and resilience.

For the ABI, welcoming Fortegra adds specialist expertise to its membership base. Sheryl Fernando, director of membership & commercial development, said that bringing in firms with niche focus areas enriches the trade body’s ability to advocate for a diverse industry and support shared goals across customer trust and market development.

The addition of Fortegra reflects a broader trend of specialty insurers seeking greater influence in industry discussions.

Last year, Fortegra Group received approval to operate in Belgium and the European Union.
