Flood Re has announced two senior appointments as part of its efforts to maintain affordable flood insurance for high-risk households and to prepare the UK insurance market for a shift to risk-reflective pricing by 2039.
Michael Murphy (pictured above, left) has joined the board as an independent non-executive director. He brings more than three decades of international experience in general insurance, life and pensions, health insurance, reinsurance, wealth and asset management, consultancy, and technology.
Murphy has held executive and non-executive roles at Canada Life, Aviva, Willis Towers Watson, and Bank of Ireland, serving as CEO, managing director, CFO, and chief actuary at global, EMEA, and Irish levels. He currently acts as an independent non-executive director for several regulated life insurance, wealth, and retirement businesses in the UK, and provides coaching to CEOs and founders of international insurtech firms.
Sue Mulry-Lawson (pictured above, right) has been named interim chief risk officer, following Dan Byrne’s recent promotion to chief commercial officer. Mulry-Lawson has over 25 years of experience in risk and compliance within professional and financial services.
Her previous roles include group chief risk officer at Standard P&I Club, head of compliance and risk at Charles Taylor, and head of UK Compliance at CPP Group. She is a qualified solicitor and founder of Ordo Consulting, a risk and compliance advisory business for the insurance sector.
Bridget Rosewell, chair of Flood Re, said, “These two key appointments demonstrate yet again the quality of people attracted to join us as we set our sights on successfully navigating through the many challenges and opportunities ahead.”
In a related development, Flood Re recently appointed Perry Thomas as its new chief executive officer. Thomas, who previously served as a non-executive director on Flood Re’s board and chaired the Risk & Capital Committee, brings experience from senior leadership roles at Lloyds Bank, HSBC, and Reinsurance Group of America.
Following Thomas’s arrival, Flood Re confirmed several executive appointments in July. Latinka Pilipovic was named chief financial officer and board member. Pilipovic brings experience from her previous role as CFO at Guardian Financial Services, as well as senior positions at Foresters Financial UK, Legal & General, and Aviva.
