Specialist re/insurance broker Tysers has appointed Marlena Truszczynska (pictured above) as head of shipping claims, marine & aviation.

Truszczynska joins from Norwegian Hull Club, where she served as vice president, claims. In that role, she led the resolution of claims cases across multiple jurisdictions and territories.

She brings more than 11 years of adjusting experience to Tysers. During her career, she has managed claims across a range of markets and segments while advising clients on policy conditions.

Truszczynska is a qualified lawyer and has been involved in marine insurance education throughout her career.

In her new role, Truszczynska will lead the shipping claims strategy for Tysers' marine and aviation division. She will also contribute to broader initiatives within the division.

Tysers is ranked as the sixth-largest broker placing business into Lloyd's of London and the 12th largest broker in the UK, placing £2.75 billion in premium annually with clients in over 100 countries.

The company's marine and aviation division works with all 12 Protection and Indemnity Clubs in the International Group, as well as most fixed premium facilities, and maintains significant portfolios in hull and machinery, cargo, ports and terminals, and marine liability.

Claims pressure mounts

The appointment comes as the shipping claims environment faces heightened pressure. Fully cellular container shipowners will face a 15% increase in the International Group of P&I Clubs' reinsurance rate for 2026-27, rising to US$1.0237 per gross ton.

According to Lockton's 2025 P&I Market Review, net claims reached US$3.1 billion in the 2024-25 policy year, up 25% year-on-year and 16% above the five-year average. The report warned that 2024-25 is on course to be one of the worst pool claim years on record.

Several clubs have pointed to the rising threat of fires as an increasing driver of major losses, Lockton said, reflecting both the risks of an aging fleet and the growing prevalence of misdeclared or hazardous cargo, including electric vehicles.

Geopolitical volatility has also weighed on the market. Clubs continue to report substantial war losses, with the Red Sea remaining a hotspot. Many fleets have opted to reroute cargo via the Horn of Africa, resulting in longer journeys, more delays, and greater potential for damage.

The container ship incident at the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has resulted in one of the industry's costliest claims, comparable to the Costa Concordia disaster, according to S&P Global Ratings.

Karl Haynes, managing director of wholesale claims at Tysers, said Truszczynska's background aligns with the company's client-focused approach.

"Her depth of experience and collaborative spirit make her a perfect fit for client-first culture and ambitions," Haynes said. "We look forward to the impact Marlena will make in leading our shipping claims' strategy."
