Specialty re/insurer Canopius Group has named Micia Yong (pictured above) as head of property and specialty treaty for the Asia Pacific region, effective July 4.
Yong joins Canopius with more than 16 years of experience in reinsurance underwriting and broking across the region. She was most recently executive director of strategic solutions APAC at Gallagher Re Singapore.
At Gallagher Re, Yong led initiatives in retro broking, MGA development, and structured solutions. In 2023, she earned recognition as Lloyd’s Treaty Broker of the Year. Her prior also experience includes senior underwriting roles at Munich Re and Axis Specialty, as well as broking positions at Guy Carpenter.
In her new role, Yong will oversee the firm's property and specialty treaty portfolio across APAC, with a mandate to develop its reinsurance offering in the region. She will be based in Singapore and report to Soon Keen (SK) Lee, CEO for APAC and MENA.
“Her track record in property treaty underwriting, along with her expertise in retro broking and structured reinsurance solutions, will be instrumental in advancing our reinsurance offering and supporting our growth ambitions in the region,” Lee said.
Yong’s appointment comes as Canopius reports strong financial performance in 2024, with gross written premiums up 26% to $3.53 billion. The group also posted a 10% increase in profit after tax, reaching $401.3 million. The growth has been attributed to a diversified portfolio and consistent underwriting results.
The company has also recently expanded its leadership team in the region. In May, Canopius appointed Chen Zhang as head of claims and Channing Chiu as regional strategy and transformation lead for APAC.
Zhang is expected to lead the delivery of regional claims strategy and client service execution, while Chiu is tasked with driving operational and transformational priorities.
In addition, Canopius has expanded the responsibilities of Paul Hackett, who now serves as regional head of distribution for APAC. Hackett’s role focuses on executing the regional distribution strategy and deepening relationships with brokers and other intermediaries.
