PartnerRe has appointed Matthew Doherty (pictured above) as head of underwriting insurance programs, effective Aug. 1.
Doherty has been with PartnerRe for over seven years, most recently serving as senior vice president and property portfolio manager within the US property multiline division. In that role, he oversaw the company’s property underwriting portfolio from its Stamford, Connecticut office.
Before joining PartnerRe in 2018, Doherty held the position of vice president at Ascot Underwriting Ltd. from 2014 to 2018, based in the Greater New York City area. He also worked as a senior analyst at JLT Group and began his career as an intern with Towers Watson.
Doherty holds a bachelor of science in economics from Babson College, where he was a member of the men’s golf team and graduated cum laude. He earned the Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designations in 2012.
In 2024, PartnerRe reported net income of US$1.44 billion and operating income of US$1.22 billion, translating to a 14% operating return on equity. Gross premiums written totaled US$9.35 billion, with non-life operations generating a combined ratio of 90.6%. Life and health reinsurance premiums saw year-over-year growth of 18.7%, contributing to overall underwriting performance.
PartnerRe's financial strength was reaffirmed in 2024 when AM Best maintained its A+ (Superior) rating and “aa–” long-term issuer credit rating for the firm and its operating subsidiaries.
The company also made leadership changes earlier this year, naming Marek Garwacki as chief underwriting officer for non-life, effective Feb. 1.
Garwacki now leads underwriting strategy and portfolio management across PartnerRe’s non-life lines. He has held several roles within the company over the past 12 years, including responsibility for group retrocession and strategic risk programs.
Recently, the company also announced that Andrew Laing was tapped to head PartnerRe Capital Management, effective Oct. 1. However, it would appear that Laing for now is headed to Aon as its UK CEO for reinsurance, as announced by the company last week.
