As global insurers refine their approaches to the energy transition, MS Amlin has appointed Nicola Harris to lead its natural resources unit, placing her in charge of a diverse portfolio spanning upstream, midstream, downstream, and renewables.
The appointment takes effect in August. Harris will report directly to chief underwriting officer Martin Burke.
In her new role, Harris will oversee a team responsible for underwriting and managing risks across the full energy chain. The portfolio includes traditional energy operations as well as a growing renewables segment, servicing a wide range of clients in the natural resources sector.
Harris brings experience from leadership positions across major insurance and brokerage firms. She most recently served as head of energy for AXA XL’s UK and Lloyd’s businesses, where she spent the past five years. During that time, she was a finalist in AXA XL’s Innovation Cup for developing a new insurance product and co-chaired the company’s gender diversity group.
Her previous roles at AXA XL included chief of staff to the global energy CUO and head of energy for the EMEA region. Prior to joining AXA XL, Harris spent four years at Allianz as head of energy and marine in the Middle East and North Africa region. Earlier in her career, she held the position of head of power and energy at Marsh, where she worked for eight years and contributed to developing the firm’s energy proposition in African markets.
Burke said Harris brings many years of experience that will support MS Amlin’s ability to serve clients engaged in energy transition strategies.
“Over the course of her career, she has demonstrated time and time again that she is calm under pressure and has a pragmatic approach to developing mutually beneficial solutions,” said Burke. “Nicola’s drive and motivation will be a great inspiration for the team and a wonderful role model for many across our business.”
While many insurers have pledged net-zero targets, progress remains uneven. Firms face pressure to scale back fossil fuel underwriting but must also meet ongoing energy demands and manage profitability. This reflects the complex environment Harris will navigate at MS Amlin, especially in balancing traditional and renewable energy portfolios.
