Montauk Point Ltd. has named Dr. Gero Michel (pictured) to oversee risk and analytics, with a mandate centered on capital efficiency and portfolio optimization for clients.
Michel will lead the firm’s risk and analytics platform, delivering risk analytics, portfolio optimization, and strategic advisory tools designed to support client strategies. His responsibilities include translating complex model outputs into decision-ready insight and supporting capital efficiency and resilience in portfolio construction.
The role also includes development of client-facing analytics capabilities, covering model governance, validation frameworks, and data tooling.
The appointment aligns with how insurers and capital providers are increasingly assessing risk at a portfolio level rather than on a transaction-by-transaction basis. The Q4 2025 Global Insurance Market Insights Report published by Aon noted that risk financing decisions are shifting toward determining where each unit of capital delivers the most value across an entire portfolio .
Montauk Point was launched in Bermuda in early 2025 by Adam Szakmary to provide independent advisory services to third-party risk capital providers, including those deploying both traditional reinsurance and insurance-linked securities.
The firm focuses on portfolio construction, lifecycle management, and capital deployment strategies, alongside advisory on hedging, reinsurance contract structures, and technology. Its approach centers on supporting investors and allocators in assessing risk-adjusted returns and downside risk across portfolios.
Michel’s remit on capital allocation and portfolio optimization aligns with this structure, where underwriting insight and analytics are applied to guide capital deployment decisions.
“Gero combines board-level judgement with deep technical expertise in analytics and capital strategy. His leadership strengthens our ability to provide clients with clearer risk insight, more capital-efficient structures, and practical analytical support for strategic portfolio decisions,” said Adam Szakmary, president of Montauk Point Ltd.
At AIG, he held roles including global head of underwriting analytics and chief risk officer positions, covering both AIG and AIG Re operations. He also served as CRO of Montpelier Re’s Bermuda platform, working with the founding team linked to the Sciemus venture focused on satellite-based underwriting.
His experience includes catastrophe modeling, enterprise risk governance, and capital allocation across Bermuda, Europe, North America, and Asia. He has also been involved in advancing analytical approaches to portfolio optimization and risk quantification in underwriting.
Michel’s recent roles include his appointment as non-executive director and senior actuarial adviser at Intellegri, a firm focused on Bayesian risk modeling for insurance applications.
