Independent specialist re/insurance broker Miller has appointed Michael Burgess (pictured above) as an account handler within its sports and entertainment team. Burgess will focus on developing and expanding the firm's sports insurance offerings.
Burgess brings a background in professional cricket spanning more than a decade. He played for Warwickshire, Sussex, and Leicestershire County Cricket Clubs, where he competed in county championships and one-day competitions. He was part of Warwickshire's 2021 ECB County Championship and Bob Willis Trophy-winning team.
Before joining Miller, Burgess worked at Howe Robinson Partners as a dry cargo shipbroker. In that role, he managed deal origination, execution, negotiation and client relationships across maritime shipping logistics.
Burgess earned a bachelor's degree in sports and exercise from Loughborough University, graduating with an upper second-class honors grade. His career transition reflects a shift from professional athletics to corporate insurance intermediation, drawing on skills developed through both sporting and commercial experience.
The appointment aligns with broader sector expansion as major brokers continue to invest in sports and entertainment expertise to meet growing market demand.
EPIC Insurance Brokers recently hired John Beam with more than 25 years of experience in sports and entertainment insurance, with Beam noting the brokerage has a proven track record in the competitive and rapidly growing sector.
Burgess’ cricket experience also comes at a time when insurers are increasing their involvement in sports. Howden appointed Jonny Gray as senior advisor to its sports and entertainment practice, expanding the firm's expertise in global sports and entertainment insurance with focus on the US market, part of a competitive talent acquisition trend in the sector.
Cricket remains a focal point for insurer involvement in sports globally. NRMA Insurance finalized a multi-year naming rights deal with Cricket Australia announced earlier this month, covering both men's and women's international cricket series including Test, One-Day International, and T20 International matches.
