Miller has announced the appointment of Paul Cumberland as chief broking officer, a newly established global position that will report directly to group CEO James Hands.

Cumberland brings more than 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, with a background spanning broking, underwriting, and portfolio management across various business lines and market segments.

His previous roles include senior positions at Aon, Markel, and Marsh. Most recently, he served as executive director at Howden, where he was responsible for portfolio analytics and optimization, delegated placement, market consultancy, and strategic trading.

In his new role, Cumberland will oversee Miller’s strategic market engagement, data-driven innovation, and service enhancements.

The appointment comes as Miller continues to pursue its program of investment and expansion, following a series of recent acquisitions and senior hires. Company leadership has emphasized the value of specialist understanding and market expertise in driving the company’s growth and delivering on its long-term ambitions.

“As our international proposition continues to grow, Paul’s appointment further reflects the significant scale and ambition of our business," Hands said. "Paul will be at the forefront of helping us deliver a unified proposition to the market and I am delighted to have him on board.”

Miller’s appointment of Cumberland follows a series of moves to strengthen its leadership and business development capabilities, particularly in reinsurance. The firm recently named Vincent Foucart as managing director in its reinsurance division, where he is tasked with business development across Western Europe, including France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Monaco.

Foucart’s focus includes international treaty, specialty lines, and strategic advisory, supporting Miller’s long-term growth objectives in the region.

The company’s growth strategy has also included a series of acquisitions. In 2024, Miller acquired specialist reinsurance broker Alwen Hough Johnson, capital advisory firm 4809 Brokers, and Spanish broker Bruzon. These acquisitions are part of a broader effort to enhance Miller’s reinsurance capabilities and expand its presence in key European markets.
