Guy Carpenter has named Matthew Flynn (pictured above) to the newly established position of head of global clients, global specialties.

He will be based in London and will report to James Boyce, CEO of Global Specialties. Flynn is set to join the firm in the coming months.

In this role, Flynn will oversee the development and implementation of the company’s strategic approach for its global clients within the Global Specialties division. The position is part of Guy Carpenter’s broader efforts to strengthen its focus on this client segment.

Flynn has more than 20 years of experience in the reinsurance sector. He most recently served as head of property catastrophe – assumed retro and UK property at Renaissance Re. Between 2011 and 2018, he held senior roles at Guy Carpenter as managing director and senior broker, working on property retrocession for clients in London, Bermuda, and other global markets.

James Boyce, CEO of Global Specialties at Guy Carpenter, said the company is looking forward to Flynn’s return.

“With extensive experience in client relationship management, Matt’s proven leadership and strategic approach will further elevate our global client partnerships,” Boyce said.

METL and Global Specialties expansion

In recent months, Guy Carpenter has been expanding its Global Specialties leadership team beyond this latest appointment. Earlier this month, the firm also brought in Richard Hakes as global head of marine, energy & technical lines (METL).

Hakes now leads a team of nearly 100 professionals focused on risk-transfer solutions for industries including shipping, offshore energy, and other technical lines, reporting directly to Boyce.

This recently expanded METL unit sits within the Global Specialties division, which encompasses a broader range of practices such as capital advisory, cyber, climate, and public sector solutions. These areas work alongside the core marine and energy expertise, providing clients with combined broking and advisory services.

The firm has also made other leadership moves in recent quarters to bolster its specialty capabilities globally. This includes naming Richard Chu as managing director for credit, bond & political risk in Asia-Pacific, Blake Dimitrijevic to lead the region’s capital advisory operations, and appointing Keith Wolfe as chief commercial officer for North America.
