Liberty Mutual Reinsurance (LM Re) has named Andreas Blosche (pictured above) as head of Northern Europe.

Blosche takes over the role following the retirement of Hans Van Oort. He previously served as deputy head of Northern Europe for two years and will now oversee the region’s property and casualty operations.

In his new capacity, Blosche is responsible for leading the team, managing strategic development, and ensuring that LM Re’s objectives and underwriting standards are met throughout Northern European markets.

Blosche played a role in establishing LM Re’s Cologne office in 2003 and has been with the company for several decades. He brings 30 years of re/insurance experience, including 20 years in property and casualty treaty reinsurance.

The appointment is effective immediately, with Blosche based in Cologne and reporting to Eric Sugier, chief underwriting officer for property at LM Re.

“We are delighted to announce Andreas’ step up to head of Northern Europe, and have faith in his extensive professional and personal expertise built across multiple decades at LM Re,” Sugier said. “His deep market knowledge and experience, including his involvement in strategic working groups and projects, will be invaluable in helping LM Re achieve its goals in the region.”

In other recent developments, Liberty Mutual announced the creation of a dedicated Infrastructure Solutions practice in September. The new practice is led by Douglas Schrift as global head of infrastructure and Manuela Baroncini as global technical lines leader.

LM Re has also partnered with Safehub to launch ShakeNet Parametric, a new earthquake parametric insurance solution. The product leverages real-time seismic data from a network of proprietary sensors to trigger payouts, and is underwritten with capacity from LM Re. As part of this collaboration, LM Re has joined the Global Earthquake Model Foundation as a sponsor.

LM Re also previously introduced what it described as the world’s first sensor-based, parametric reinsurance treaty for earthquake risk. This was achieved in collaboration with XS Global and Safehub, with the initial deployment taking place in Mexico. The treaty uses real-time, building-specific data to provide more accurate claims payouts and represents a step forward in the use of sensor technology in re/insurance.
