Ryan Specialty has announced that John Gorman (pictured above) will join Ryan Re Underwriting Managers as head of facultative and facilities, effective Oct. 1.
Ryan Re, a managing general underwriter (MGU) specializing in property and casualty reinsurance, will see Gorman initially focus on the casualty facultative business, following the Markel renewal rights reinsurance flow of business.
Gorman brings more than three decades of experience in the global insurance sector. He most recently served as head of facultative at Berkshire Hathaway, where he launched and developed the property and casualty facultative business. His tenure at Berkshire Hathaway saw the division become a significant participant in the market.
“JJ is a market leader in the facultative business, and we are thrilled that he is joining our team to help build out this important product for us,” said Emil Issavi, president and CEO of Ryan Re.
Issavi noted that Ryan Re has experienced steady growth since its launch in 2019, and that Gorman’s leadership is expected to support the development of a scalable facultative and facility business.
In recent months, Ryan Specialty Underwriting Managers (RSUM) has also made leadership changes in other areas of its business. Alan Ferguson was appointed CEO of US Assure following Ryan Specialty’s acquisition of US Assure in 2024.
Ferguson, who will also remain president, steps into the role as Ty Petway retires after more than 30 years with the firm.
Earlier this year, Ryan Specialty launched a new practice group called Ryan Specialty National Programs. This group focuses on specialty, class-specific package business on both an admitted and non-admitted basis, and is led by CEO Shawn Yingling.
The new practice consolidates multiple business units, including Irwin Siegel Agency, SUITELIFE Underwriting Managers, and programs acquired through previous transactions.
Additionally, RSUM introduced Celerity Risk in February, a business unit formed from the acquisition of Innovisk Capital Partners. Celerity Risk combines the strengths of CorRisk Solutions and Celerity Pro, focusing on cyber insurance and professional liability.
