IQUW Bermuda has named James Mitchell (pictured above) as its new chief underwriting officer, effective immediately, as the company continues its expansion in global reinsurance markets.

Mitchell joins IQUW Bermuda from Guy Carpenter, where he was managing director for global specialties and North American treaty. In that role, he focused on client advisory, data-driven insights, and supporting strategic growth in Bermuda.

He previously spent 13 years at RenaissanceRe, holding senior positions in both Bermuda and London. Earlier in his career, he worked in underwriting at Catlin Underwriting Agencies Ltd.

As chief underwriting officer for Bermuda, Mitchell will oversee all reinsurance underwriting and will be responsible for developing the company’s underwriting culture and building relationships with clients and brokers.

“James is a significant hire for IQUW Bermuda and we are delighted to welcome him to the executive team,” said Stephen Young, CEO of IQUW Bermuda. Young said Mitchell’s experience in underwriting, portfolio management, and digital innovation is aligned with the company’s strategy to build a reinsurance platform focused on technical excellence.

“His leadership will be instrumental in accelerating our growth and delivering long-term value to clients, brokers and the global market,” Young said.

Mitchell’s arrival comes at a time when Bermuda’s reinsurance sector is taking steps to reinforce its position in the global market. This year, the Bermuda government introduced a new tax credit plan for the reinsurance industry, aimed at encouraging continued investment and ensuring compliance with global minimum tax standards.

The sector’s stability has also been highlighted by a recent stress test conducted by the Bermuda Monetary Authority, which found that the island’s reinsurers are adequately capitalized even under severe adverse scenarios.

Mitchell’s appointment also comes after IQUW Bermuda announced plans in September to expand its product offerings to include mortgage, credit, and cyber reinsurance.
