Howden Group has named April McLaughlin (pictured above) as managing director of its new Howden Miami office.

In the newly created role, McLaughlin will establish a reinsurance presence in Miami and oversee the integration and expansion of Howden’s specialty insurance operations across Latin America and the Caribbean.

McLaughlin will lead Howden Re Miami, which will provide treaty and facultative reinsurance solutions. The role includes responsibility for Howden’s current specialty business in the region, which spans Central America and the Caribbean.

Howden says that the position is designed to connect regional clients with global insurance and reinsurance markets by coordinating across the group’s operations.

McLaughlin brings more than 25 years of experience in treaty and facultative reinsurance underwriting. She most recently served as head of Chaucer’s Latin America hub, supported by Orchid Underwriting. Before that, she was head of Latin America reinsurance at AXA XL, formerly Catlin, from 2015.

She will report to Sonia Caamaño, CEO of international growth markets, and Mario Baotic, head of international growth markets, international treaty, Howden Re.

Max Scagnetti, currently managing director for specialty at Howden Miami, will take on the role of executive advisor for Miami and Latin America, while continuing to report to Caamaño.

Caamaño said McLaughlin’s arrival aligns with Howden’s plan to build on the Miami platform developed under Scagnetti’s leadership over the past seven years.

McLaughlin will begin her role at Howden following the completion of her contractual obligations with her current employer.
